A More Affordable Home Buying Option
Home prices in our area and around most of the country have risen dramatically in the last few years. As mortgage interest rates continue to climb, affordable housing may seem out of reach for first time home buyers or for those who don’t have equity in a home they currently own. However, prices seem to be slightly dropping for homes further from Athens and Watkinsville in counties like Oglethorpe and Madison. Here are some other advantages of buying a home a bit further out.
Lower prices. This has always been the case even before the recent price drops.
You often can get more land and privacy than in more suburban areas.
Generally there are fewer restrictions and regulations on land use so if you really want chickens or goats, this might be the place to be.
Because it’s less populated, even if you have a bit further to commute, it can be a gorgeous country drive with little traffic, a perfect way to destress on your way home.
I know buying in the countryside isn’t for everyone. In fact, I’ve had clients in the past move further out and then a year later sell and move back in town because they needed to be closer to their already established friends and kid activities. But, if you are craving privacy or want to consider how much more home and land you can get for your money, it is certainly worth exploring.
Another perk of exploring country homes is running across small family owned restaurants and cafes. Recently in Stephens, GA near Crawford in Oglethorpe County, we discovered Carrie’s Corner. It’s right on what will be the firefly trail but don’t wait for the trail’s completion to go check it out. I haven’t had a chance to try their biscuits yet (opens at 6 AM for breakfast) but their Tuesday Blue Plate special of meatloaf, fried corn (kind of like creamed corn), turnips and cornbread was AMAZING. Tuesday through Saturday there’s a different plate on offer with burgers, hot dogs, and chicken tenders any day. It’s housed in a convenience store so there are cold drinks, snacks, and other essentials for sale. The best part though were the friendly people making and serving our food. Their smiles would be enough to make the drive to Stephens.
