As we continue to highlight areas in and around Athens & Watkinsville we decided to drop in on Monroe, Georgia. Known as the Antiques Capital of Georgia, “With over 1,200 booths and 300,000 square feet of antiques, vintage, and re-purposed items, the City of Monroe and Walton County has the largest concentration of antique stores of any other county in Georgia.” (Walton County provides a map for your convenience so you can check them all out, see below. Quote and map from Downtown Monroe’s website.) Located about 30 minutes or so from the Watkinsville area, this amazing town has a LOT to see, do and eat! It is incredible to see how it has grown and changed over the past 20+ years. In addition to antiques Monroe has a lot to offer including: year round annual events, historic homes, two parks located downtown including a Dog Park, The Visitor’s Center and Museum on the history of Monroe, a Historic Walking Tour with a pdf to guide the way, a Farmer’s Market every Saturday during growing season, a wonderful variety of public art displayed around downtown and some beautiful local arts and crafts available for purchase at The Monroe Walton Center for the Arts. In between all of these activities there are so many super tasty restaurants to grab a bite to eat and gorgeous shops to buy something new. There are so many places we didn’t have time to visit or mention so drop by Monroe and make a day of it!
