Scott Antique Markets - What’s New, What’s Gone, and Where to Find the Deals
I have just spent another lovely day at Scott Antique Markets and thought I should give an update as things have certainly changed in the almost 10 years since I’ve been going. If you are new to Scotts, here are previous blogs that will help get you oriented: Scott Antique Markets - What is it and Why You Should Check it Out and How to Plan Your Visit to Scott Antique Markets.
There are still lots of deals and unique finds to be had – or you wouldn’t see me continuing to go almost every month – but some of my favorite vendors are no longer there. Donnie Dale, who used to be in the back right corner, hasn’t come in a few years. We recently discovered that he has a shop in North Carolina. If you ever need brand new furniture and are willing to explore a chaotic warehouse as big as Lowe’s then visiting Donnie Dale’s Furniture is worth the drive with a U-Haul.
Harold is still in the back left corner of the South building and this is where I always start. If you go on a Thursday, it will be especially chaotic as everyone clusters around him as things are unboxed. We arrived at about 10 AM this Thursday and most of the best pieces of furniture were already sold. There was an incredible antique farmhouse table that apparently he sold for $300. It seriously might be worth getting a hotel and getting there at 6 AM to get some of these deals. Be prepared though, because these are not garage sale prices. Harold gets kind of annoyed with someone who only wants a few things - his goal is to sell as much as possible and I notice the same shop owners coming each month to buy in bulk. You can find beautiful, unique treasures at a discount though if you are prepared to wait in a line to ask Harold and only Harold what something will cost. This trip I bought a few incredible rugs, my favorite portrait ever, and of course, a chair.
For the past few months, there haven’t been as many outdoor vendors, which is where some of the best deals are to be had. It might be due to how hot it has been, so hopefully more will be back in the future. Even with fewer vendors outside, it’s still worth a wander. Jim got some great antlers and beautiful plaques to mount them.
Where some of my favorite bargain vendors used to be there are now a lot of artists. Scott Antique Markets has become a phenomenal place to get original art for all kinds of tastes and budgets. We bought a few paintings that I’ll be adding to my booth at Queen of Hearts along with Jim’s antler mounts.
Whether you just want to spend a day browsing through some beautiful and curious items or are looking for that perfect piece of furniture or art, Scott Antique Market is a day worth spending. *
